Keeping Your New Specs Clean

What you thought might be blurred vision turns out to be just a smudge on your lenses. So what do you do? Take your glasses off, hit the lenses with some breath, and wipe them down with your shirt.

This couldn’t be more wrong.

Cleaning your glasses shouldn’t require any use of your clothing. That speck of dust you’re trying to remove might actually be a tiny rock that will scratch your lenses and have you spending more money on costly repairs.

Caring for your glasses properly is an important part of wearing them. You want your glasses to last you till it’s time for a new prescription.

When cleaning your glasses, you’ll want to make sure that your hands are clean first. You’re going to be moving them around in your hands, so the last thing you want is to add more smudges or dirt to your specs.

If your glasses came with a lens wipe, use that to take off minor smudges, such as those caused by fingerprints. Wipe down your lenses thoroughly, and be sure to run the wipe over the frame itself as well. Sometimes oil from your head and face can build up on the frame, even causing discoloration on clear frames. You always want to have clean frames sitting on your face!

If your lenses are extra dirty, say from food, grease, or other substances that require more than a cloth, it might be best to use some water. You’ll want the water to be warm but not hot since heat can damage certain lens coatings. Run your glasses under the water. Again, even if you’re just needing to clean the lenses, you should take this opportunity to wash your frames as well.

Take a bit of dish soap to your lenses and frames. Using your finger, spread the soap all over your glasses. Be sure to get the nose pads, arms, and areas where the lenses rest in the frame.

Lastly, rinse off your frames, eliminating any and all soapy residue. Any residual soap will cause streaks and spots when dry off your glasses. Soapy smudges are just as annoying as the ones caused by greasy hands, so making sure they’re clear of residue is important.

Now you’ll want to dry your glasses. Use the lens wipe that came with your glasses, or a microfiber towel, if you have one. Do not use a paper towel or regular towel, as they could scratch your lenses. Gently wipe down the entirety of your glasses until there is no moisture left. You don’t want any water left near the metal, as it could rust.
